Le residenze di corte del Regno d’Italia (1805-1814).
Architettura ed etichetta in età napoleonica

a cura di Giovanna D’Amia, "Anelli del CdRR" n. 10, Mimesis, Milano-Udine 2022

Among the various modernising factors that the Napoleonic era helped to spread throughout the Italian peninsula, a significant role must be acknowledged in a culture of living born from the encounter between 18th-century Italian tradition and the spread of French and international models. The book - which has its roots in the conference Culture of Living in the Napoleonic Age: Court Residences in the Kingdom of Italy, held in dual mode at the Politecnico di Milano between 7 April and 19 May 2021 - addresses the issue in the context of the Kingdom of Italy (1805-1814), questioning the transformations of the court residences that became part of the Crown Estate as a result of the third constitutional statute of 5 June 1805 or as a consequence of the subsequent territorial annexations. The buildings constituting the court residences of Milan, Monza, Brescia, Mantua, Modena, Venice, Stra and Ancona are dealt with in detail, along with unrealised projects for a royal palace in the Bolognese territory.

The book aims to take stock of state-of-the-art and recent research on Napoleonic residences in the first Kingdom of Italy, highlighting the different ways in which pre-existing and, in many cases, already configured buildings was adapted to the court etiquette that found its models in French prescriptions. But also to reflect, starting from the many projects that were realised or remained at an embryonic stage, on a culture of living that identified the court palace as an ideal model (as demonstrated by the academic exercises modulated on the theme), as well as a secret laboratory for elaborating design solutions in the field of architecture or green design.
