Seminar (in remote mode) on structural mechanics topics for first-year students of Laurea Magistrale (Master of Science) programmes in Architecture (LM BEI, LM AUD, LM BA)
The seminar, consisting of 18 hours of lectures/tutorials, represents an opportunity for students to go through some of the fundamental concepts and procedures used for structural analysis. The aim is to revisit and clarify basic notions of structural mechanics that are important for a good understanding of what will be presented in the structural design courses and in the construction design studios.
Three different sections of the seminar are organized: one will be run in Italian and two in English. The whole activity will take place in remote mode. The seminar is open to students enrolled in three different Laurea Magistrale programmes. Therefore occasional timetable clashes with institutional courses/studios may occur; however such inconvenience is mitigated by the fact that all the seminar hours will be recorded and the corresponding multimedia files will be made available to students.

Main topics dealt with in the seminar:

• Determination of internal actions in statically determinate structures (trusses, beams, frames) and representation of their diagrams; indefinite equilibrium equation for a straight beam under transverse loading.
• Deflection of beams by the method of double integration.
• Force (flexibility) method for beams; displacement (stiffness) method for beams and simple frames.
• Use of structural analysis codes to study the behaviour of simple elastic structures.

The two seminar sections in English will be run by Andrea Consiglio and Zehra Irem Turksezer according to the following timetables consisting of 9 two-hours sessions, from 6.30 to 8.30 pm:

• Section A (instructor: A. Consiglio): 22-24-28-30 September; 6-8-12-14-20 October
• Section B (instructor: Z.I. Turksezer): 23-24-28-29 September; 6-8-12-14-20 October

The seminar sections in English provide a support to the “Structural Design” courses of the LM BEI (professors Valente, Gentile), of the LM AUD (professors Muciaccia, Bamonte) and to the construction design studios of the LM BA.
