Social Brutalism
New Centre for Rozzol Melara, Trieste
Harald Trapp / Christian Kühn
Technical University Vienna

Designed between 1968 and 1974 by a collective of 29 local architects, coordinated by Carlo Celli, the "Rozzol Melara" residential complex was built in the 1980s by the Autonomous Housing Institute (IACP). The residential complex, which is located on an 11-hectare hillside property, comprises 648 apartments for 2,500 residents. There were also a social, a health and a religious centre, more than 20 shops, plus an elementary and middle school as well as a community garage. In addition to planning errors, the lack of social diversity and the poor connection to the city in the 90s led to the neglect of the facility and social problems.

Although Rozzol Melara is under redevleopment since the beginning of the millennium, the problems of the community centre remain unsolved: shops and common areas are abandoned, the public passages are not used. Taking into account current considerations to promote new "commmons" in urban areas, a new centre for Rozzol Melara is to be designed on the basis of a theoretical examination of the ideas of brutalism and recent urban research.

The design-studio is fo Master students and starts from 04.09.-09.09. in Trieste with a symposium and a workshop, submission of the projects is on 17.12.2020.
