A Manifestation of Space
The exhibition space of Vittoriano Viganò will become the most important element of this exhibition. The space will be dismantled from curtains and walls and from its use as temporary auditorium. The exhibition space will open to the street, to the sunken public courtyard in the center of the university and to the opposite backyard. The entrance to the teaching and learning areas of the Politecnico di Milano through a main square with all the shared programme of the university attached to it gives this exhibition space very open and public feeling. The exposed space is used as a display for some projects like the parking in Bahrain, a private house in Prague, Incidental Space, the pavilion for the Kingdom of Bahrain in Dubai, and a museum in Guangzhou. These different projects are understood as a work on the basics of architecture and as an investigation on a wide range of possibilities of the experience of the media of architecture, the architectonical space. This understanding becomes visible in the entire design process through concept models, sketches, workshop drawings and pictures from the construction site. The exposed design process from the concept to the built work is trying to get more and more to the core of the different initial ideas of each project. The same understanding of architecture as a discipline is revealed in a series of texts. One of them is an essay on spaces built by Borromini.
By recovering the hidden beauty of the exhibition space by Vittoriano Viganò the exhibition of different projects from different parts of the world for a short time of a couple of weeks is most of all a gesture of respect and a hint to the architectural marvels of the city of Milano.
