EARTH SERIVE IS A PROGRAM BY RICHARD INGERSOLL

Milan has the extraordinary potential to become the greenest metropolis

in the world.

Earth Service is proposed as a multidimensional program that will involve

local farmers, hundreds of design and landscape professionals, thousands

of students, as well as thousands of citizens. It begins with the

principles of Agricivismo, an approach to urbanism where cities are no

longer planned in terms of buildings but rather in terms of cultivated

spaces. Instead of planning, we could have plantification, privileging

the organic rather than the inert (concrete and asphalt).

Our slogan is “farm the gaps.”

Earth Service will operate with an underlying strategy: “Botany is

destiny.”

The Earth Service program derives from Terra Viva Workshops, a program

inspired by the Terra Viva manifesto prepared by Vandana Shiva for the

opening of the EXPO.
Nine workshops were held during the period of the

EXPO at the Bosco in Città under the aegis of the Milan Politecnico

dealing with issues such as how to coordinate the various interests in an

urban agricultural situation, how to create a garden with permaculture,

how to create a swimming pool with phytodepuration, how to build with

natural materials such as mud and straw, how to use gardens for therapy,

how to organize a social supermarket, how to take back lands for

agriculture instead of allowing land grabbing.
