TeDoc (Thesis and Documentation service)

ACTIVITIES
TeDoc (Thesis and Documentation service)
 provides Cartography - resources, such as:

  • current and historical maps
  • urban plans of the Municipality of Milano
  • maps of the historical cadastres
  • georeferenced statistical data

In addition, it assists graduating students in the thesis submission (Master of Science - Laurea Specialistica and Magistrale) and ensures their management and publication in POLITesi.

The service periodically organises training courses to present its services and to guide users in the use of cartographic materials.

MOA - Modelling Laboratory

ACTIVITIES
In the Modelling Laboratory, created in 1987, architectural models are made through a thorough interpretation and consistency analysis of the plotting or the plans and of the work’s materials to be represented. The Laboratory staff has matured a remarkable experience in building plastic models with traditional methods as well as with the use of laser cutting plotter and CNC machines.

 

The production of models is intended also for external institutions and for professional studios, especially in the cases of plans of particular complexity and scientific interest.

L.I.T. (Technical Information Laboratory)

ACTIVITIES
The Technical Information Laboratory, or LIT
, is a space devoted to the filing of technical documents, to the display of actual samples of construction details, to the update on materials and systems for the building industry, with special focus on innovative technologies in order to become the place of reference for students, graduate students, professors and professionals, too.

Its activity is developed along two directions - didactics and research - that operate in an integrated fashion to help the dissemination of information and knowledge development.

Urban Simulation Laboratory

ACTIVITIES
The Urban Simulation Laboratory "Fausto Curti" is a research facility of the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies at the Politecnico di Milano. Founded in early 2007 by Fausto Curti and Peter Bosselmann, director of the Environmental Simulation Laboratory at the University of California at Berkeley, the laboratory deals with urban design.

Through an interdisciplinary approach centered on the perceptual aspects and environmental issues, and with the support of various simulation methods, the different activities of the laboratory contribute to cross-reading of the complex relationships between urban design and physical context, thus ensuring a better control of the cumulative outcomes.

Our research has a threefold mission: to innovate, to experiment and to communicate. Using innovative methods of investigation and simulation to be integrated to more traditional methods of analysis, design and evaluation. Verifying through experimentation the outcomes of design alternatives in order to facilitate the understanding and to show the consequences of planning decisions. Effectively communicating the results of urban changes in order to facilitate the confrontation between planners, policy makers, developers and citizens.

Archivio Piero Bottoni

ACTIVITIES
With over 90,000 documentary units, the Archivio Piero Bottoni has been, since its foundation occurred in 1983 by Giancarlo Consonni, Lodovico Meneghetti and Graziella Tonon, the most important documents' collection of Milan's Polytechnic. In 1999, the confirmation of the donation of all documents' heritage by Bottoni's heirs (his wife Giudi Rossini Bottoni and their sons Piero Alessandro and Stella) to Milan's Polytechnic. Besides widely documenting Piero Bottoni's activity, being a leading figure in the Italian architectural and town-planning culture of the Twentieth Century, such Archive collects original drawings and documents by many different architects such as Le Corbusier and Terragni. 

The theme complexity of the whole collection kept in the Archivio Piero Bottoni faithfully mirrors the abundance of experiences and relationships that marked the figure and intellectual development of its protagonist: poet, mathematician, architect, painter, sculptor and town planner, ‘inventeur de montagnes et de magnifiques constructions populaires’ (Fernand Léger), passionate activist of the Modern Movement in the thirties, untiring culture organizer and team-work promoter, essayist, anti-academic University professor, member of the National Constitutional Court, extraordinary committee member of the Eighth Triennial, Milan’s Town councillor in the opposition from 1956 to 1964.

The Archivio Piero Bottoni website offers itself as a strategic instrument to increase the value of the whole collection and promote studies about such a complex figure as Piero Bottoni (1903-1973) is, while representing an extraordinary documentary source for the study of the town planning, architectural and artistic culture of the twentieth century.

POLINDT - LABORATORY FOR STRUCTURAL MONITORING AND DIAGNOSTICS

ACTIVITIES

The principal objective of the laboratory is to carry out research into new methods for monitoring and diagnosing stability, functionality and durability of structures and civil and mechanical engineering components. The diversified and combined expertise of the participating departments allows new lines of research to be implemented, including:

 

integration and improvement of established diagnostic methods for different types of materials;

development of innovative or low-cost instruments and sensors, integrating structural diagnostics and monitoring knowhow with the physics of sensors and digital and analogue electronics;

automation of the monitoring aspects of large structures and hazardous or difficult to access locations.

 

The PoliNDT Laboratory also aims to provide momentum to the teaching of structural monitoring and diagnostics in degree and PhD programmes, as well as post-graduate professional training.

In addition, thanks to the joint efforts of laboratories already engaged in on-site diagnostics and the collaboration of other "Politecnico" structures, such as the Materials, Structures and Construction Testing Laboratory, the PoliNDT laboratory can also offer its services to third parties and provide support to other University Departments for in-situ structural diagnostics.

UrbNetLab

ACTIVITIES
UrbNetLab provides research and consultancy services to all levels of public administrations, and to private initiators in the field of implementation planning. Its scope includes assisting in the forecasts for public planning, based on structural and/or strategic plans, received from regional governments, or from the simple requests of developers, administrators, economic entities, and other stakeholders of various types.
